Study And Science Of Hair And Scalp

Trichology is the science of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair. Trichologists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of the causes of hair loss and maladies of the scalp – hair loss, hair breakage and itching, flaky scalps. And it all starts with a thorough, in-depth consultation.

Anagen Phase

This is the growing stage and lasts an average of three to seven years. This phase determines how long your hair actually grows. Your hair does not fall out at this stage.

Catagen Phase

This is a transitional or resting phase – it also happens to be the shortest at an average of ten days.

Telogen Phase

This last stage is when your hair is done with the growing and falls out. The affected follicles then remain dormant for approximately three months before starting all over again with the Anagen Phase.

At any one time, each follicle on your head are in different phases of hair growth.

Hair loss and thinning occurs when the growth cycle is interrupted. This can happen with medication, an illness, metabolic imbalances or poor nutrition.

Some common types of hair loss include male/female pattern hair loss (Androgenetic Alopecia), diffused hair loss (Telogen Effluvium), spot baldness (Alopecia Areata) and hair breakages (which can be due to cosmetic processing or hair pulling).

The trichological approach to treating hair loss is to ascertain the causes of the condition, then formulate a course of treatment aimed at treating the root cause to restore a healthy scalp and improve hair growth.
